Consumer engagement

We believe safer care is built when the voices of patients, carers and families are genuinely heard. Lived experience offers insight that cannot be gained from data alone and helps us understand what matters most to people who use NSW Health services.

We partner with consumers to improve patient safety across NSW Health by shaping policies, programs and resources that support safer, more person‑centred care.

How we partner with consumers

We partner with consumers as People Partners – people who use their lived experience to inform and improve safety initiatives across the NSW health system.

People Partners work alongside our staff in a range of ways, including:

  • contributing to advisory groups and committees
  • participating in workshops, focus groups and consultations
  • reviewing information for patients, carers and families
  • informing policy, programs and improvement initiatives.

Our approach is respectful, inclusive and practical. We value trust, transparency and psychological safety, and we are committed to working respectfully with Aboriginal communities and people from diverse backgrounds across metropolitan, rural and regional NSW.
