Blood management

Blood transfusion is very safe but can pose risks that may be serious. Safe blood management reduces these risks, improves patient outcomes and supports the efficient use of blood and blood products.

As the lead agency for blood management in NSW, we bring together the guidance, resources and governance for safe practice. This work supports health services to meet the requirements set out by the NSQHS Blood Management Standard.

The Blood Watch Community of Practice connects blood management facility leads across NSW. We provide members with collegial support and resources to support blood management. Contact our Blood Management team to learn more.

Blood sector governance

We partner with the NSW Ministry of Health, Agency for Clinical Innovation and NSW Health Pathology to convene and manage the NSW Blood Management Governance Committee.

  • The NSW Blood Management Governance Committee is a multiagency group that oversees the strategic plan to monitor and manage risks linked to blood and blood products across the state.
  • The NSW Blood Management Clinical Advisory Committee provides expert clinical advice on the use of blood, blood products and Patient Blood Management. This multidisciplinary group supports both public and private sectors across NSW.
