Patient blood management (PBM) is a set of medical and surgical strategies that conserve and optimise a patient's own blood. It is evidence-based practice that aims to improve clinical outcomes by reducing unnecessary exposure to transfusion of blood components.
PBM supports better patient outcomes by helping clinicians prevent and manage anaemia, minimise blood loss and use transfusion appropriately when it is needed.
Guidelines and standards
The National Patient Blood Management Guidelines provide evidence-based recommendations for different patient groups and clinical settings.
The National Safety and Quality Health Service Blood Management Standard supports health services to implement safe and effective blood and blood product management practices.
See the Blood Management Standard for guidance, resources and practical tools to support implementation in NSW.
Education
The resources below are designed to assist clinicians and healthcare teams with PBM in practice.
