NSW Medicines Formulary a finalist in the 2024 NSW Health Awards

23 September 2024

The NSW Medicines Formulary has been nominated as a finalist in the 2024 NSW Health Awards.

The formulary is a finalist for a team award in the Patient safety first category, which acknowledges a commitment to putting patient safety first every day.

In partnership with the NSW Ministry of Health, the Clinical Excellence Commission’s (CEC) formulary team has delivered a statewide rollout of the medicine formulary and associated governance and procurement processes across all public hospitals.

The CEC led an 18-month transition to implement the statewide formulary, affecting over 65,000 clinicians across 200 metropolitan, regional, and rural public hospitals.

“The NSW Medicines Formulary is making the delivery of healthcare safer and more equitable for patients across the state by ensuring consistent access to evidence-based medications,” Adjunct Professor Michael Nicholl, CEC Chief Executive, said.

“It is a fantastic example of clinicians and agencies across the NSW Health system working collaboratively to improve patient safety and sustainability in healthcare delivery.”

NSW Health initiated the reform to improve the use of medicines in public hospitals, ensure equitable access to medicines and consistent treatment across the state, and address procurement challenges.

The resulting NSW Medicines Formulary promotes consistent, efficient healthcare delivery, enabling clinical decisions to inform statewide medicine procurement and saving almost $100 million in the first financial year.

This remarkable success was underpinned by effective collaboration with hospital networks, local health districts, HealthShare NSW and eHealth NSW.

Congratulations to our CEC colleagues and those in partner agencies who worked together to achieve this outstanding result and have been recognised as 2024 NSW Health Awards finalists.
