Foundational Clinical Leadership Program

The Foundational Clinical Leadership Program (FCLP) is aimed at middle clinicians and managers. It uses a practice development framework and is delivered by facilitators employed in the Local Health Districts (LHDs) and Specialty Health Networks (SHNs) who are participating in the program.

The Foundational CLP is an experiential model and comprises four intersecting modules, which explore and build on leadership within the health setting, knowledge of self, team dynamics and process improvement.  Components of the FCLP include workplace leadership coaching, Action Learning Sets, workshops, seminars and a CPI project. The program takes a holistic view of the participants and program being both process improvement and leadership development.

The program is multidisciplinary in nature and participants will be required to undertake a work-based improvement project, with coaching and support provided by local facilitators. It aims to enhance the capacity of clinicians to lead sustainable system improvement and patient safety initiatives; to work more effectively with available clinical information and resources; and to develop a culture of patient-centred care within an environment that supports work-based learning and collaboration.

Learning Objectives

The Foundational CLP covers the fundamental aspects of leading improvement initiatives within the NSW health system. The ultimate aim of the program is to build a cohort of clinical leaders with the skills and commitment to shape a sustainable culture of patient safety, professionalism and positivity within the NSW health system. Objectives include:

  • Foster a culture of learning and person-centred care
  • Lead patient-focused change practice activities with a healthcare team
  • Apply governance principles within their work practices
  • Critically reflect on their own practice and be systematic in improving performance
  • Act as an effective role model for leadership practice
  • Build and maintain effective interpersonal relationships
  • Access and use data and resources available within the healthcare setting to drive clinical improvement processes
  • Make supportive frameworks available to other staff in order to enhance their reflective practice and broader professional development

Face to face over 10 to 12 months.

Evaluation of program

Participants will be asked to give feedback at the conclusion of the program survey. It is an expectation that all participants complete the various course evaluation surveys.

Assessment

It is expected that participants will participate fully in the practical sessions and be fully engaged. At graduation participants are to conduct a 15 minute presentation on their improvement project and submit an A1 size Poster. Participants are also encouraged to submit their project to the ACI Innovation Exchange before graduation.

CEC Certificate

Certificates will be issued to participants who complete the program.

CPD points

Participation in this program will qualify participants for continuing professional development hours, as required by their respective National Board.
