Sterilization of Re-usable Medical Equipment

Risk Assessment Tool

The risk assessment tool for compliance with AS/NZS 4187:2003 (the tool) has been developed to enable and support review of the performance of sterilization services departments.

The tool enables health services to:

  1. Identify compliance with NSW Health policies and national standards for cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing re-usable medical and surgical instruments, particularly AS/NZS 4187:2003
  2. Measure performance of their sterilization services department over time and comparison with other sterilization services departments
  3. Risk-rate issues of non-compliance and identify a corrective plan of action
  4. Assess capacity to meet accreditation requirements.

Please note: The risk assessment tool does not meet all requirements of AS/NZS 4187:2014 and is under review.

Sterilizing Services Weighting Identification Tool

As part of a review of the quality of data being provided to NSW Health by Sterilizing Departments, the Sterilizing Services Key Performance Indicators (KPI) Reference Group identified wide variations in the application of weights to activity data across the State.

A comprehensive weighting identification tool has been developed to assist hospital Sterilizing Departments in the applying of weights consistently for NSW Health hospital Sterilizing Departments.
